Rust and Corrosion Treatment in Doncaster
Surface rust and structural corrosion are two different problems that need two different answers, and telling them apart properly is the first job. We treat what can genuinely be treated, and we are direct about what needs welding or panel replacement instead of painting over it.
Surface Rust and Corrosion Through a Panel Are Not the Same Job
Surface rust sits on top of sound steel. It is caused by the paint or coating being broken through, exposing bare metal to air and moisture, and it can usually be ground back, treated and resealed without touching the strength of the panel underneath. Corrosion that has gone through the panel is different. Once rust has eaten through the metal, no amount of grinding and priming brings back structural steel, and the only honest fix is welding in new metal or replacing the panel.
The reason this distinction matters is our warranty position. We give a 6 year warranty on all paintwork, but we cannot give warranty against rust unless the panel has been replaced or welded. Painting over corrosion that has already gone through the steel, even well, does not stop it from continuing to spread underneath the new finish, so we will not sell that as a permanent fix.
What we can do is assess the panel honestly, tell you which category it falls into, and treat it properly rather than guessing.

The Rust and Corrosion Jobs We See
Rust turns up in some panels far more than others, usually where water sits or drainage was never designed well by the manufacturer in the first place.
- Surface rust on arches, sills and door bottoms
- Bubbling paint around stone chips that have been left untreated
- Corrosion around the base of a windscreen or rear screen surround
- Rust damaged panels needing repair or replacement
- Anti-corrosion coating and treatment for vehicles prone to it
- Rust that has appeared after accident damage was left unrepaired
How We Treat Rust, Panel by Panel
The right treatment depends entirely on how far the corrosion has actually gone, which is why every job starts with grinding back to find the true extent before anything is decided.
Exact primer systems and cure times follow the product data sheet for the material in use on the day.
| Corrosion found | Preparation | Treatment | What we will tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface rust, sound steel underneath | Ground or sanded back to clean, bright metal, with edges feathered so the treated area does not leave a visible step. | Etch or epoxy primer applied the same day the metal is exposed, sealing it before moisture can start the process again. | This is genuinely repairable and falls within our normal paintwork warranty once treated and finished. |
| Bubbling paint around an untreated stone chip | The bubble is opened up fully, since rust spreads sideways under paint faster than it shows on the surface. | Ground back to sound metal, primed and refinished, usually as a small, contained repair. | The earlier this is brought in, the smaller and cheaper the repair. Left for years it grows well beyond the original chip. |
| Corrosion around a screen surround or seal | Assessed with the trim or seal removed, since corrosion under a seal is often worse than what shows at the edge. | Treated as sound steel allows, or flagged for panel or surround replacement where the metal has gone. | We check before quoting rather than assuming, because this area can go either way depending on the vehicle. |
| Corrosion through arches or sills | Ground back to establish the true edge of sound metal, which is often further than the visible rust suggests. | Where the steel has gone, this is a welding or panel replacement job, not a paint treatment. | Painting over corrosion that has gone through the panel does not stop it, and we will not warranty it as if it were fixed. |
| Rust appearing after unrepaired accident damage | Checked for how far corrosion has spread from the original damage point before any work is priced. | Ground and treated if surface only, or referred into a panel repair if the metal has been compromised. | The condition of the metal decides the treatment, not how the damage originally happened. |
| Preventative anti-corrosion coating | Applied to clean, treated metal on vehicles prone to rust in known weak spots, such as arches and sills. | A protective coating over sound steel to slow future corrosion starting in the same areas again. | This is prevention on sound metal, not a treatment for rust that already exists. |
How We Assess and Treat a Rusted Panel
The sequence below is how we find out what we are actually dealing with before committing to a treatment or a repair.
Check the visible extent
We start by looking at where the rust is showing, on the surface or bubbling under the paint.
Grind back to find the true edge
Surface treatment always starts with grinding, because rust spreads sideways under paint further than it shows, and the true boundary only appears once the old finish is off.
Decide: treat or refer to panel repair
If sound metal remains, we treat it. If the corrosion has gone through the steel, we tell you honestly that this needs welding or panel replacement instead.
Clean and degrease the exposed metal
Any residue that could hold moisture under a new primer coat is removed before treatment starts.
Prime the same day
Etch or epoxy primer goes on the same day the metal is exposed, so bare steel is never left overnight to start rusting again under the repair.
Build and blend the finish
Primer filler where needed, flatted, then colour matched on our Lechler scheme and blended to a natural break line.
Apply anti-corrosion protection where appropriate
On vehicles prone to rust in the same spots, we can apply protective coating to slow corrosion starting again in future.
Final check
The repaired area is checked against the surrounding panel before the vehicle leaves, and the owner is told plainly what was treated and what to watch.
We Will Tell You When Paint Is Not the Answer
Rust that has gone through a panel needs metal, not more paint. If your vehicle needs welding or a panel replacing rather than treating, we will say so rather than selling a repair that will not hold.
What Rust Treatment Can Fix, and What It Cannot
This is the area of the business where being upfront matters most, because the wrong repair on corroded metal can look fine for a few months and then fail badly.
Well suited to treatment
- Surface rust with sound steel confirmed underneath once ground back
- Bubbling paint around a stone chip caught before it has spread far
- Corrosion on vehicles where prevention is the goal, not repair of existing damage
- Rust following accident damage, once the metal condition is assessed
- Panels where the corrosion is confirmed contained to the surface after grinding
Where we will flag a limitation
- Corrosion that has gone through the panel. Our paintwork warranty does not extend to rust unless the panel is replaced or welded
- Structural areas such as sills and chassis rails where corrosion affects the vehicle's strength, which need welding assessment rather than paint
- Any repair sold on the promise that paint alone stops rust that has already gone through steel
- Very advanced corrosion where the panel is more cost effective to replace than repair
- A firm price before the panel has been ground back, since the true extent is not known until then
Rust and Corrosion Questions
Is my rust surface rust or something more serious?
We cannot tell reliably without grinding it back, because rust spreads sideways under paint further than it shows on top. That grinding step is always the first part of the job, before we tell you which category it falls into.
Do you offer a warranty against rust?
We give a 6 year warranty on all paintwork, but we cannot give warranty against rust unless the panel has been replaced or welded. Painting over corrosion that has gone through the steel does not stop it spreading, so it falls outside that warranty.
Can you weld in new metal if a panel has rusted through?
Where corrosion has gone through the steel, welding or panel replacement is the honest option rather than treating it as a surface repair. We will tell you which situation your vehicle is in once we have ground back to see the true extent.
Why does rust keep coming back after it has been painted?
Usually because the treatment did not reach sound metal in the first place, or moisture got under a coating that was applied to metal that was not fully dry and clean. We prime the same day metal is exposed specifically to prevent this.
How much does rust treatment cost?
It depends entirely on how far the corrosion has spread once we grind back to check, so we cannot give a standard price without seeing the vehicle. Bring it to our Doncaster workshop for an accurate assessment and quote.
Can you treat rust around a windscreen or seal?
We check this with the trim or seal removed, since corrosion under a seal is often worse than what shows at the edge. Depending on what we find, this is either a straightforward treatment or a referral into panel or surround replacement.
Is anti-corrosion coating worth doing if my vehicle has no rust yet?
Yes, if your vehicle is a make or model known to rust in particular spots, such as arches or sills. Coating applied to clean, sound metal slows corrosion starting rather than treating damage that already exists.
Will the treated area match the rest of the car?
We mix our own paint on site using our Lechler scheme and blend the colour out to a natural break line, so a treated panel reads as one finish with the rest of the vehicle rather than a visible patch.
How quickly should I get a bubbling stone chip looked at?
As soon as you notice it. Rust under a bubbled chip spreads sideways under the paint, so a repair caught early is small and cheap, while the same spot left for a year or two can grow well beyond the original chip.
Does rust after an accident get treated differently?
The treatment depends on the condition of the metal, not on how the damage happened. If accident damage was left unrepaired and rust has followed, we assess it the same way as any other corrosion, by grinding back to find the true extent.
Do you handle insurance claims involving rust damage?
We handle insurance approved repairs generally. Whether rust damage is covered depends on your policy and the cause, so bring the paperwork along with the vehicle and we will talk you through what applies.
Can I drive the vehicle while I decide on rust treatment?
For surface rust, usually yes, though we would recommend not delaying since it spreads. If the corrosion affects a structural area such as a sill or chassis rail, we will tell you directly if we think it needs attention before further use.
